A much underused resource is your local or national newspapers, radior or television stations. Having been a freelance journalist, if you have something news worthy that other people may interested in then consider writing up some news releases.
Generally 500 words is sufficient. See the example I have included just to get an idea of what is required. Here are a few good places to post press releases.
A. Press Blaster.
PressBlaster is a windows program that allows you to send your own press releases directly to the media. I've been using press releases to promote my company's products and services for the last four years. I use press releases because their highly effective in getting FREE publicity, making my telephone ring, and driving traffic to my web site. It's the kind of advertising that you simply cannot buy.
While I've been manually sending my releases in the past, I've recently discovered PressBlaster!, which totally blew me away. The program includes a database of over 7000 editors and press affiliates. Complete contact information is built right into the program, including the editors name, address, phone, fax, and email address.
It's like having 3 programs all in one easy to use application. In ten minutes I sent my press release to over 2000 contacts. Here's how you do it:
1. Screen one - Create your press release, you can spell check it, and it even creates email messages in HTML (I use BOLD text and COLOR in my email to attract even more attention)
2. Screen two - Pick the media category you want to send to. The whole thing is pre-sorted, so you don't have to hunt down the appropriate editors who would most likely print your release.
3. Click Send!
That's it. It formats your press release to industry standard, and sends it via email directly to the editors. On top of that, it can print labels too. I follow up with a "hard copy" of my press kit by snail mail.

Many US networking and affiliate programs require you to have a US mailing address and tax ID number in order to participate. This will fulfill the requirements for many of them. It also makes it easier for them to deal with you.
