Increase Your Web Sites Traffic with an Off-line Newspaper.

Most methods of online marketing and promotion are rapidly becoming very much like the dinosaurs ... extinct!
FFA's are ineffective as they stand now. Search engines are dubious in the sense that unless you have a top ten listing you are hardly likely to get much in traffic. The odds are against you. Safelists well they are wearing thin due to automation.
So instead of doing the same old thing to produce the same ineffective results, if you are a bit adventurous then this idea may interest you.
Establish Your Own Newspaper.
If your looking for an interesting project put out your own newspaper or newsletter. This could cover topics of interest for your area. When I owned an Art Gallery, Furniture & General Store, I published and sent out by bulk post a monthly paper with a circulation of over 5000.
This brought in a lot of custom to my stores, plus drew in advertising from other businesses. In fact I probably should have remained a News Paper publisher, as this was quite a profitable business.
But... you can do the same, promoting your web site.
A general formula of success is to have articles that make people want to read it. These could include having some helpful tips including pets, home maintenance, how to save money, hobbies, cooking receipes, travel, local happenings and of course computers and ebusiness.
You may even have a specialised news paper/letter that you publish... for example... the stockmarket, wrestling news, pidgeon fanciers, wood crafts, knitting, you name it.
Don't worry about not having enough material to publish. Many stories can be taken from the internet, from writers that have granted permission to use these articles.
Make sure to have loads of local interest stories, combined with photo's of clubs and local residents makes for a highly virile news publication. These should be provided by the organisation from their press secretary. Make sure you have set a deadline for receiving these stories.
Printing.
Don't get tempted to print you newspaper out on your own printer.
Nothing beats the true black ink of a print shop and the cost would be too prohibitive.
You will need to know about print costs, so get some quotes from your local printers. *** The more you get printed the cheaper it becomes *** So check out rates from 1000 - 5000 - 10000 etc. The main cost is in the initial layout, but if this is done yourself production costs decrease.
Also discuss with your printer time frames. How much time they need to complete a job. Additional costs like two or more colours. Get a good insight into your printer, because they are the one side of the enterprise that you have little control over. Its best to pay a few dollars more with a professional that can deliver and understand your needs.
Don't forget to ask the printer if their business would like to help sponsor your news paper, either by advertising in it... or by direct endorsement... "We are proud to have XYZ Quality Printers help print our news paper.
Most of the design and layout can be done by yourself on your computer. Just a cheap scanner and your own camera can get most of the photographics done. If you have a few dollars consider gettng a digital camera. It is fast efficient and no costs for film processing.
You may even find a graphics designer keen to become involved in your news paper project if they can get work from your clients, designing logo's etc...
Find out the economics whether it is cheaper to post in bulk or have people do mailbox drops.
You may find other businesses in your area interested in advertising in the first edition to offset some or all of the costs.
You will either need to own or have access to:-
1. A computer with a word processing and a drawing program.
2. A scanner.
3. Access to the internet.
4. A printer. To allow you to proof read your work.
5. A comfortable computer chair. Highly desirable.
6. Either a digital camera or just a regular still camera.
You probably have most of these now. If not Computers have really fallen in price on both the new and second hand market. You could well and truly be in business for less than $2000. That is the capital side, however you will need to have a budget for setting up your papers production.
The time frame of delivery is important. If you set a time of weekly, fortnightly or monthly make sure people can expect it in their mailbox or from their delivery point on a specific time.
A monthly publication is probably best to start off with. This allows you plenty of time to put together your paper, get advertising sponsorship, handle the printing and still having ample time with your family or friends. You will probably need to allow up to 10 hours a week to start off with.
Naturally your website will get some prime advertising spots. But see if you can find other business people in your area, or on the internet that would be interested in advertising in the real world. Let local businesses know the dynamics of your own community paper. Inform them of the circulation. Ask them for their business!
HANDY TIP's. If the cost seems too high to deliver by post or contractors, see if you can strike a deal with supermarkets or stores in your area to have your newspaper left on their counters for FREE distribution. You may be able to strike a deal for either low cost advertising or Free advertising if the store or super- market has a large quantity of customers.
If you are civic minded or for that matter interested in fostering good public relations, you may even find clubs that for a fee deliver your local news paper.
Hardware stores, paint shop, hair stylists, auto shops and plumbing supplies may bring you in Tradesmen that want to promote their service. The list is endless. Everyone is seeking to build their own business cost effectively.
Get to know the Sporting and Service Clubs . Again offer to report on their stories and publish photos that they send you. People love seeing their photo's and names in print. I increased my store traffic by over 5000% by having my own News Paper.
Just remember to start off small and gradually build the business over time. Keep your overheads low. Foster good public relations with the community and their service organisations. I think my news flyer to begin with , was not more than a 2 by A3 size double sided papers.
It is cheaper to use coloured paper than to use two or more different colours from the printer shop. Yellow paper with a stark black print stands out.
Network Your Business.
Become a member of your local chamber of commerce or small business association. This will help you build a good list of potential enterprise operators seeking to promote their businesses. Make sure that all members throught the association are aware of your news publication.
If you have a flare for writing, an empathy with people and want to increase the volume of business with any enterprise you own, a real life news publishing business could return handsome dividends. It may even become a full time business.
### End note. Since your own newspaper is most likely created online... why not publish it onto the internet as well and have both editions running together. Promote the fact that your community newspaper is online, serving your clients 24/7.
Also run cheap classifieds. The classifieds themselves may meet the cost of your paper and then some. Have a site online that people can place their order through PayPal. This will create immediate cashflow.
One last tip. Don't run accounts. Take payment instantly online either through paypal or any other C.C. merchant account provider. By all means take cheques from reliable solid businesses.
Just one final note... try not to get yourself involved in subjects or stories likely to get you involved in controversy. It may be prudent to discuss your plans with your lawyer or at least look at the various laws pertaining to publishing.
